Game controllers appeared in the 1980s. They quickly became the most important interface to play video game consoles because of there versatility and their shape. The diversity of brands and game types gave birth to an increasing variety of models. At a time where gestural interfaces became trendy, this book describes the history of game controllers, and joypads more specifically. Based on historical documents, patents, designers’ interviews, as well as the exploration of controllers genealogies, it discusses the main parameters that influenced their design. In doing so, the authors show that joypads are not just a basic peripheral, but an original way to address video-game culture.
